It would pretty much stand to reason that the first step in automating a certain process is to identify that process and how automation could benefit or streamline that process.
Backing-up a step the entire process needs to be looked at from a safety standpoint. If automating can reduce the amount of safety requirements for a given process, then you might be well on your way to the automation of that process. Of course, it is going to be even more beneficial if you have the basic understanding of automation such as hydraulics, pneumatics, mechanical devices and other equipment used in the processing of your product.
