How to Tell if Your Problem is the Motor or Control

Two particular equipment components that are very important concerning industrial operations are motor and control. However, determining what could possibly be a motor vs. control problem is not always easy. Recognizing a motor vs. control problem can be difficult. This is why it is always a good idea for you to have a set checklist to utilize whenever you have to determine a motor vs. control problem.

For Motor Problems:

  1. Listen for strange noises.
  2. Feel for excess heat.
  3. Smell for burned areas.
  4. Check the starter for loose connections.
  5. Check all fasteners.
  6. Measure the resistance through its contacts. The readings should fall within the acceptable range.
  7. Ground test line and load circuits at the starter. The results should fall within the acceptable range.
  8. Check the fuse.
  9. Check the motor junction box.
  10. Check line to line.

For Control Problems:

  1. Check the power connections and wiring.
  2. Test voltage for power connections and test each wire for continuity.
  3. Check the power components.
  4. Check control connections and wiring.
  5. Test voltage for control connections and test each wire for continuity
  6. Check the circuit breaker.
  7. Stress the connectors by bending the wires.

By taking the time to check various aspects of the motor and control, you can frequently determine the specific problem. Once you determine the source of the problem, you can take action to solve the problem.

A motor vs. control problem is sometimes difficult for even experienced personnel to determine. There are many variables in play involving motor and control operations.
